Elucidation for Madness

She failed to grasp my lack of trust

locking secrets within space

so tried to steal the gate

permitting ponies to run free

if only for a while

searching deeply

into mind to retrieve a component

that was warm or kind.

A place where she might gatecrash

a magnum opus with impunity

ducking and diving as if a midnight thief

to melt snow a thousand dreams deep

with stained glass broken on obdurate defeat

performing cerebral summersaults

to open up my cemetery

where apparitions linger

dormant and ordinary…

I couldn’t place her name

and yet it was so familiar to me

She asked that I come back

and yet I had always been here

…hadn’t I?

I was confused

and in my embarrassment checked

but could not find a reference

to take me back to the place

where Elizabeth beckoned…

I moved my copy of “Stranger Music”

in order not to spill tea on to its sleeve

and then… a connection was made.

she said she had been searching

for me all of her life

and now she had found me.

Then I realised

that I had been looking

for “me” even longer and as yet

not had the same success

so the connection was lost

A few steps on ladder rungs

was not so much a problem

especially knowing

that prey would not be around

for a finale.

games were fun and the excitement

of knowing that snakes were hidden

waiting an opportunity to raise their heads

and strike appealed to an inbuilt

sense of challenge.

A few mice here and there

to keep interest and the gift

of knowing how to break the rules

was all that was required

she didn’t understand

but did anyone I considered
